Private boat or tourist catamaran in the Ría de Arousa: which one to choose (an honest comparison)
Tourist catamaran trip or private boat hire with skipper in the Ría de Arousa? We compare real price per person, route, schedules and experience so you can choose well.
We rent out our boat with skipper from the port of Vilanova de Arousa, and we get this question almost every week: "What do you recommend — the mussel-raft catamaran or hiring a boat just for us?". The honest answer is: it depends on what you're after. There are days when the tourist catamaran is the right call, and others when you'll regret not having booked a private boat. Since we know both experiences well — the O Grove catamarans and our own — we've written this comparison with no tricks, so you can decide with real numbers.
The two ways to get out on the water in the Ría de Arousa
The tourist catamaran: the group excursion
The catamarans and passenger boats sail mainly from O Grove, and also from other ports around the ría. They are big vessels, carrying 50-150 passengers, with fixed timetables and a closed route: usually a 60-75 minute loop around the mussel rafts (bateas), underwater viewing windows on some boats, and a tasting of steamed mussels with wine on board. Tickets usually cost between €20 and €30 per adult, with discounts for children.
It's a well-rounded product for what it is: cheap, predictable and hassle-free. You hop on, they explain how mussels are farmed, you eat some mussels, and in just over an hour you're back at the dock.

The private boat with skipper: the ría made to measure
What we do is something else. An 8.5-metre boat just for your group — maximum 6 people —, professional skipper included, departing from the port of Vilanova de Arousa. No loudspeakers, no boarding queue, no fixed schedule: the route is decided with you. Want to anchor at the Areoso sandbank and swim? Get close to the Punta Cabalo lighthouse? Cruise slowly between the mussel rafts, stop for photos, go eat seafood in Cambados or O Grove? All of that fits in one trip.
Our rate is €300 for a half day (4 hours) and €500 for a full day, fuel not included. You don't need any licence: we are the skipper.
The comparison, point by point
Price: the real maths per person
Here's the sum most people never do: from 4-5 people upwards, the private boat competes head to head with the catamaran.
- Catamaran: around €25 per adult × 6 people = roughly €150 for a 75-minute ride.
- Private boat: €300 for the half day ÷ 6 people = €50 per person for 4 full hours, plus your share of fuel.
In other words: for double the price per person you get more than triple the time on the water, the whole boat to yourselves and a tailor-made route. If there are just 2 of you, the maths changes and the catamaran wins on pure price; if you're a group of friends or a family, the private boat usually works out better than it looks.
Time and route: 75 minutes versus 4 or 8 hours
The catamaran does its circuit and comes back. It doesn't stop, doesn't anchor, and you don't swim. With our boat, a half day covers the Illa de Arousa, the Areoso islet with its Caribbean-white sand and a quiet swim; a full day lets you cross the whole ría: Cortegada, Cambados, O Grove and A Toxa, or even the lighthouse route out to Sálvora if the sea allows.
The experience on board
On the catamaran you share the deck with dozens of people and the experience is the same for everyone. On a private boat, you set the plan: your own music, a cooler with whatever you want to bring, stopping wherever you fancy, relaxed or sporty pace. For a couple, a celebration, a bachelor(ette) party or a day out with kids, that difference is everything. Children, by the way, wear properly sized lifejackets, and the boat is certified for 10 — we limit it to 6 passengers precisely so everyone travels comfortably.
The mussel rafts: we see them too (and better)
Some people think the mussel-raft route belongs exclusively to the catamaran. Not at all: the more than 2,000 bateas of the Ría de Arousa are there for everyone, and with a small boat we get closer, and without rushing. We'll explain how mussel farming works — we're from here, we've watched it all our lives — and if you want a tasting, we do it our way: we moor in O Grove or Cambados and you sit down to mussels, clams and Albariño at a real table, not a plastic tray with 80 people around you.

When to choose each option
To be fair, this is how we'd sum it up:
Choose the tourist catamaran if:
- There are 1-2 of you and budget rules.
- You just want a quick, one-hour first contact with the ría.
- You're travelling without a booking in high season and want something immediate.
Choose a private boat with skipper if:
- You are 3 to 6: the price per person gets very close and the experience is in another league.
- You want to swim, anchor at Areoso or step onto coves you can only reach by sea.
- You're celebrating something: anniversary, birthday, proposal, bachelor(ette) party.
- You want to decide the route: lighthouses, islands, mussel rafts, fishing villages, fishing or sunset.
- You're after peace and quiet: no queues, no timetables, no crowds.
Why from Vilanova de Arousa
Departing from Vilanova has a geographical advantage that doesn't always get told: we are right in the centre of the ría. Areoso is minutes away, the Illa de Arousa sits just opposite, Cambados is a short hop and O Grove or Cortegada are well within a full-day trip. From O Grove, on the other hand, anything beyond the mouth of the ría is a long way off. Besides, parking and boarding in Vilanova is easy even in August — we cover it in our guide on how to get to Vilanova de Arousa.
Questions we always get
Do I need a boating licence? No. The boat always sails with our professional skipper. All you have to do is step aboard.
What if the weather turns bad? The Ría de Arousa is the most sheltered of the Rías Baixas and is navigable almost all year round. If the forecast looks ugly, we move your booking to another day at no cost.
Can I bring food and drinks? Of course — there's a cooler on board. And if you prefer a tablecloth, we'll take you to eat in port.
How much does it cost in total? Half day (4 h) €300, full day €500, fuel apart depending on the route. Split between 6, that's from €50 a head plus fuel.
Book your private trip
If after reading this the catamaran is your thing, go for it — it's a great plan and you'll come back happy. In summer the weekend slots go fast: the sooner you write, the better time we can give you.
