Romantic Boat Trip on the Ría de Arousa: The Couples' Plan You'll Never Forget

Some couples celebrate their anniversary with a dinner. And then there are the ones who, years later, are still showing everyone the photo of that evening when the ría turned orange, the boat drifted quietly off the Punta Cabalo lighthouse, and there wasn't another soul for miles. We rent out our skippered boat from the port of Vilanova de Arousa, and we've seen it all: anniversaries, marriage proposals with the ring hidden in the boat's cooler, couples celebrating ten years together and couples on their very first date. If we've learned one thing, it's this: a private boat for two is the most absurdly good romantic plan you can buy for €300.

In this guide we'll walk you through a romantic boat escape on the Ría de Arousa: the route we take, the best time of day and year, what to bring on board, how we stage-manage a marriage proposal without giving it away… and exactly what it costs.

Why a private boat beats any other date

Look at it from the other side. A romantic dinner lasts two hours and you share it with a full dining room. A hotel getaway is nice, but it's what everyone does. A private skippered boat is a different category altogether:

• Real privacy. The boat is yours. No other passengers, no group schedules, no loudspeakers. Just the two of you, the skipper (who knows exactly when to become invisible) and the whole ría.
• An unbeatable setting. The Ría de Arousa is the largest of the Rías Baixas: deserted islets like Areoso, a national park on Cortegada, lighthouses, mussel rafts and sunsets that don't seem of this world.
• Zero logistics for you. Course, weather, anchoring and safety are our job. All you have to do is step aboard in Vilanova de Arousa.
• No licence or experience needed. The skipper is included. You don't need to know a thing about boats.

Our boat is 8.5 metres long and certified for 10 people, but we never take more than 6. For a couples' trip that means space to spare: a bow deck to lie on, shade for whoever wants it, and room to move without ever bumping into each other.

The romantic route: our proposal for two

Every trip is tailored, but when someone asks for "something romantic" this is the afternoon route we usually suggest — the one that works best:

1. A gentle start among the mussel rafts

We cast off from the port of Vilanova de Arousa and cruise slowly through the bateas, the wooden mussel-farming platforms scattered across the ría. It's our most distinctive seascape and the perfect moment to open the Albariño: you're sailing the ría that gives the Rías Baixas appellation its heart, with Cambados — the Albariño capital — in sight. Bring your own bottle or tell us when you book and we'll have it chilling in the on-board cooler.

2. Anchor and swim at Areoso

Guidoiro Areoso is an uninhabited islet of white sand and turquoise water north of Illa de Arousa. In the late afternoon, once the day boats have gone, you'll often have it entirely to yourselves. A mid-afternoon swim, a towel on the bow deck and silence: that's usually the moment when couples understand why this plan is addictive.

3. The Punta Cabalo lighthouse in the last light

We finish off the Punta Cabalo lighthouse, on the northern tip of Illa de Arousa. It's a small lighthouse from 1853, planted on the rocks, and with the sun going down behind it, it is quite simply the best couples' photo you can take on the ría. We cut the engine, let the boat drift, and there's no hurry at all.

4. Sunset on the water

A sunset experienced from the sea is nothing like watching it from land: the water multiplies the light, and for twenty minutes everything — the ría, the mussel rafts, the Illa — turns gold and then pink. We motor back to port with the last of the light. About four hours in total: our half-day trip.

Marriage proposals on board: how we organise them

It's one of the things we're asked for most, and one of our favourites. If you're thinking of proposing on board, this is how it works:

• Everything is agreed over WhatsApp beforehand, without your partner seeing a thing. The exact moment, a signal agreed with the skipper, music if you want it.
• The best setting: anchored off the Punta Cabalo lighthouse or at Areoso at sunset. No crowds, no noise, no waiters watching.
• The skipper doubles as photographer. We're not professionals, but we've been taking that photo for years and know exactly when to press the button. If you'd rather bring a photographer, they count as one more passenger and there's plenty of room.
• Touches on board: flowers, a special bottle, cake… We stow it all out of sight before you come aboard.

So far, everyone has said yes. We promise nothing, but the statistics are on your side.

When to come: the best season for a romantic trip on the ría

• May to September is the golden season: swimming at Areoso, long evenings and calm seas. In September the ría empties of tourists and the Albariño harvest begins: the light turns more golden and the trips more intimate.
• Autumn and winter have a charm of their own: a still ría, low photographer's light and not another boat around. For couples avoiding the clichéd dates, a winter outing with blankets and a thermos of coffee is a surprisingly good plan. It does need planning around the weather, with some flexibility on the date.
• Time of day: for romance, late afternoon and sunset — no contest. Check the exact sunset time for your date; in summer we cast off around 5–6 pm, in September a little earlier.

What to bring on board (and what we provide)

You:

• Albariño or cava (there's a cooler on board) and something to nibble: Galician tinned seafood, cheese, fruit. If you fancy empanada or shellfish from Cambados, we'll tell you where to order it in Vilanova.
• Swimsuit and towel from May to September; a light jacket always — it cools down on the water after sunset.
• A camera or a phone with plenty of battery. You'll take a lot of photos.

Us: skipper, fuel billed separately by route, cooler, shade, safety equipment and the local knowledge of every corner of the ría so the plan works even if the wind shifts.

What a romantic boat trip costs

Our rates are the same for two people as for six, because you're hiring the whole boat:

• Half day (4 hours): €300 — perfect for the sunset route we've just described.
• Full day: €500 — a morning of coves and swimming, lunch at anchor, an afternoon of lighthouses and sunset.
• Fuel is charged separately, depending on the route (for a romantic evening trip it's a moderate extra).

Split between two, the half day comes to €150 per person. Less than a tasting-menu dinner with wine pairing — and we guarantee it will be remembered far longer.
