Things to do in Vilanova de Arousa: a weekend plan on land and sea

We rent out our skippered boat from the harbour of Vilanova de Arousa, and almost every visiting client asks us the same question: "besides the boat, what is there to do around here?". The short answer: far more than you'd expect. Vilanova doesn't have the tourist billboard of Sanxenxo or O Grove, and precisely because of that it keeps something that is getting hard to find there: a genuine fishing town, with a working fish market, tapas at local prices and the best boarding point on the whole Ría de Arousa.

This is our honest guide to squeezing a full weekend — 48 hours — out of Vilanova de Arousa, combining land and sea. We wrote it the way we'd tell a friend: no fluff, real names.

Saturday morning: the town and its history

The old fishing quarter and the harbour

Start by walking the seafront promenade from Castelete beach towards the harbour. Vilanova lives facing the ría: you'll see traditional dorna boats at their moorings, mussel boats unloading and, across the water, the outline of Illa de Arousa with its almost two-kilometre bridge. If you're up early, head to the fish market area: the bustle of clam and mussel landings is a scene you won't find in more touristy towns any more.

Valle-Inclán's birthplace

Few people know this before coming: Vilanova de Arousa is the birthplace of Ramón María del Valle-Inclán, one of the giants of Spanish literature. His birth home, the Casa do Cantillo, is now a museum you can visit in under an hour. The writer filled his books with this ría — his Sonatas make no sense without this landscape. A few metres away stands the bust of Julio Camba, the other local genius, a journalist and Spain's most quoted food writer. A town of 10,000 people producing two pens like that is no coincidence: here, people eat well and look at the sea with a discerning eye.

Tapas before lunch

Do a tapas round through the town centre and order what the locals order: Carril clams a la marinera (Carril is ten minutes away), steamed rope-grown mussels, grilled zamburiñas (variegated scallops) and a cup of Rías Baixas Albariño — you're in the heart of the denomination of origin, with Cambados just across the inlet.

Saturday afternoon: beaches and sunsets

• As Sinas beach: Vilanova's main beach, fine sand and calm ría waters, perfect with kids.
• O Terrón beach: by the mouth of the river Umia, wilder, with views of the Illa de Arousa bridge.
• The Illa de Arousa bridge: cross it on foot or by car at sunset. When it opened in 1985 it was the longest bridge in Spain, and the backlit view of the mussel rafts is postcard material.

If you still have energy, drive up Monte Lobeira (15 minutes away): the classic viewpoint over the whole Ría de Arousa, and a perfect "map" of everything you'll be sailing the next day.

Sunday: the big day — the ría by boat

We'll say it plainly, because this is our trade and we see it every week on the faces of the people who step aboard: you only truly understand the Ría de Arousa from the water. From land you look at the ría; from the boat you are inside it. Our boat leaves from Vilanova harbour — a five-minute walk from anywhere in town — with skipper included, so you need no licence whatsoever: you enjoy, we handle the sailing.

The route we'd sail with you on a Sunday

1. Mussel rafts (bateas): minutes out of the harbour we're weaving between the platforms where the world's best mussels are grown. We'll explain how the farming works while the seagulls escort us.
2. Punta Cabalo lighthouse: on the northern tip of Illa de Arousa, an 1853 lighthouse that only shows its best face to those arriving by sea.
3. Guidoiro Areoso: the white-sand, turquoise-water islet that looks Caribbean. In summer we anchor for a swim; in autumn and winter you'll have it practically to yourself for a walk and photos.
4. Back along the Illa coastline and, if the day allows, a look into the Cambados inlet before returning to port.

What it costs and how it works

Our rates are simple: half day (4 hours) for €300 and full day for €500, fuel charged separately by consumption. The price is for the whole boat, up to 6 people plus the skipper, so split between a group of friends or two families it costs about the same as a dinner out. The boat is 8.5 metres long: plenty of room to travel comfortably, with a sun deck for lounging.

For a weekend trip, our advice is to book Sunday morning if you're doing a half day: the ría usually wakes up calm, and you'll be back ashore for lunch with a seafood appetite and a phone full of photos.

Where to eat and sleep

Without spamming names: in Vilanova and O Cabo there are seafood restaurants where the product comes straight from the market next door, and Cambados — a listed historic town and the capital of Albariño — is ten minutes away for a more stately dinner. To sleep, between Vilanova, Illa de Arousa and Cambados you'll find charming hotels and rural houses among the vineyards; in low season (right now, in autumn) prices are very reasonable.
