Bachelor or bachelorette party on a boat in the Ría de Arousa: the celebration nobody sees coming

Every year the same thing happens: someone messages us on WhatsApp saying "hey, we're planning a surprise for my brother — could we do something on the boat?". And every year the answer is the same: not only can you, it will probably be the most memorable plan of the whole weekend. We rent out our boat here, from the port of Vilanova de Arousa, and we've seen it all: bachelor and bachelorette parties, milestone birthdays, anniversaries, marriage proposals disguised as "just a normal cruise" and even a retirement party complete with Galician empanada.

In this article we'll tell you how a bachelor or bachelorette party on a boat in the Ría de Arousa actually works, what you can (and can't) do on board, what it really costs, and why this plan beats yet another paintball session hands down.

Why a boat party always works

We've seen it dozens of times, and the reason is simple: on a private boat the group is together, undistracted, with scenery that does half the work for you. No queues, no strangers, no venue closing times. Just your crew, the skipper and what is arguably the most spectacular ría in Galicia.

• Genuinely private. The boat is yours alone: maximum 6 people plus the skipper. Nobody else on board.
• No licence or experience needed. We take care of the boat. You take care of having fun.
• The plan adapts to the group. Chilled crowd? Anchor in a cove, swim and vermouth. Party crowd? Music, paddle boarding and jumping off the side.
• Next-level photos. Between the mussel rafts, the Punta Cabalo lighthouse and the sandbanks of Areoso, the party photo album takes care of itself.

What if we're more than 6?

The most common question. Our boat is 8.5 metres long and certified for 10 people, but we sail with a maximum of 6 passengers plus the skipper because the difference in comfort is huge: room to move, room for the cool boxes, room to sunbathe. If your group is bigger, the most practical option is to split into two shifts (morning and afternoon) or book two consecutive half days. It has worked brilliantly for big parties: half the group sails while the other half has a drink at the port, then they swap.

How the trip works: our favourite route for groups

Every group is different, but if you let us suggest, this is the route that works best for a celebration:

1. Departure from the port of Vilanova de Arousa

We board in Vilanova, cool boxes already loaded (yes, you can bring food and drink on board — more on that below). The first minutes weaving through the mussel rafts already have everyone reaching for their phones: over 2,000 floating platforms forming a labyrinth unique in the world.

2. Course set for Areoso, the jewel of the ría

The islet of Areoso, north of the Illa de Arousa, is our own private Caribbean: white sand, turquoise water and protected dunes. We anchor nearby, and anyone who fancies it takes a dip or swims ashore. For the party group photo, nothing in Galicia comes close.

3. Punta Cabalo lighthouse and the coast of the Illa

We round the Illa de Arousa past the Punta Cabalo lighthouse, with its rounded boulders and hidden coves. If conditions allow, we stop at a cove only reachable by sea: your group's private beach for a while.

4. Sunset toast (the star moment)

If you sail in the afternoon, this is the finale: the ría opens to the west and the sun sets literally over the water. Toasting the bride or groom with the sun going down behind the Illa de Arousa is the moment everyone remembers. We cover it in detail in our article on the sunset boat trip.

What you can bring on board (and what you can't)

We're flexible because we want the celebration to feel like yours, but clear rules make things better for everyone:

• Yes: cool boxes with food and drink, a speaker with your playlist, reasonable decorations (bride-to-be sash, matching t-shirts, well-tied balloons…), cakes, empanadas and all the seafood you like.
• Yes, and we recommend it: order some oysters or a local Albariño wine in advance. Give us a heads-up and we'll tell you where to buy them in Vilanova or Cambados that same morning.
• Sensibly: alcohol is allowed in moderation — you're on a boat, and the skipper can limit consumption if safety is at stake. In ten years we've never had to cut a trip short, and we'd like to keep it that way.
• No: confetti and glitter (they end up in the sea), smoking on the bow area, and anything that puts the group at risk. Swimming, always with the boat anchored and the skipper informed.

What a boat party costs in the Ría de Arousa

No small print here. Our rates are the same for a bachelor party as for any other trip:

• Half day (4 hours): €300 for the whole boat. That's €50 per person with a group of 6.
• Full day: €500 for the whole boat. Just over €83 a head for a full day on the ría.
• Fuel is charged separately, depending on the route. For the usual routes around the Illa de Arousa and Areoso it's a moderate extra that we confirm before departure.

Compare that with the per-person cost of any party activity in Sanxenxo or O Grove in high season and do the maths: a private boat, skipper included, and the whole ría to yourselves.

Skipper's tip: book early

Saturdays from May to September go fast, and parties tend to cluster right there. If your date is fixed (and with bachelor parties it almost always is), write to us as soon as you have it. On weekdays and in September–October there's far more availability, and the ría in autumn — with the Albariño harvest and the seafood at its very best — is a secret we've already shared here.

Other celebrations we love hosting

The bachelor-party formula works just as well for any special occasion:

• Birthdays on board: cake, candles and the ría as a backdrop. 40ths and 50ths are our classics.
• Anniversaries and proposals: if there's a ring involved, tell us in secret. We've been accomplices a few times now and we haven't spoiled one yet.
• Company outings and team building: a morning trip with a seafood lunch stop on the Illa de Arousa bonds a team better than any office workshop.
• Gifting the experience: not sure what to give? A boat trip voucher is a present nobody leaves in a drawer.
