Sunset Boat Trip on the Ría de Arousa: The Outing Nobody Forgets

If you ask us which outing our clients repeat the most, the answer is easy: the sunset boat trip on the Ría de Arousa. We rent out our boat right here, in the port of Vilanova de Arousa, and we've watched this sunset hundreds of times — yet we still go quiet when the sun starts sinking behind Illa de Arousa. The whole ría turns orange, the mussel rafts stand out in black against the water, and the sea flattens into a mirror. No photo does it justice, though everyone tries.

In this article we'll tell you, with the honesty of people who sail this ría every week, what the experience is really like: what time to set off depending on the month, where we anchor for the best view, what to bring on board and how much it costs.

Why the Ría de Arousa sunset is different

Galicia has great sunsets in many places, but the Ría de Arousa has three very specific advantages:

• The orientation. The ría opens to the west-southwest, so the sun sets literally over the water, between Illa de Arousa and the mouth of the ría. From land there's almost always something in the way; from the boat, there isn't.
• The bateas. More than 2,300 floating mussel-farming platforms create a landscape unlike anywhere else in the world. Backlit at sunset, the rows of rafts look like a floating village in silhouette. It's the photo everyone takes home.
• The wind drops. In summer, the afternoon northeasterly breeze usually eases off late in the day. The water calms down just as the light turns beautiful. Sailing then is something else: smooth, silent, unhurried.

What the sunset trip from Vilanova de Arousa is like

We leave the port of Vilanova de Arousa about two hours before sunset. Our classic route goes like this:

1. Heading for the bateas in golden light

Straight out of port we set course for the mussel-raft grounds. The last hour of sun is when they look their best: the low light picks out the ropes, the gulls head home to roost and, with a bit of luck, a bottlenose dolphin — the ría's resident arroaz — shows up near the platforms, where food is easy to find.

2. Anchoring off Illa de Arousa

Then we look for a quiet anchorage. Depending on the day and the tide we choose the southern side of Illa de Arousa or the waters around Areoso, that white sandbank that looks Caribbean and is practically empty by late afternoon. If it's still hot — in August it happens — there's time for one last swim in calm water.

3. The moment: the sun dropping behind the island

And then we cut the engine. The sun slides slowly down behind the outline of the island and the Punta Cabalo lighthouse, the sky shifts from gold to pink and from pink to violet, and the ría falls into a silence that takes you by surprise. It's the moment for a glass of chilled Albariño — this is Rías Baixas wine country, it would be a sin not to bring some — and for ignoring your phone for a while.

4. Returning with the village lights

We head back to port with the last of the light, watching the lights of Vilanova and the island come on. All in, the sunset trip fits perfectly into our 4-hour half-day charter.

Our honest tip: September is the secret month. The weather holds, the water hits its warmest temperature of the year, the ría is quieter and the sunsets — with a touch more moisture in the air — come out redder than in mid-July.

What to bring on a sunset boat trip

• A warm layer. Even after a 30-degree day, the breeze cools quickly over the water once the sun goes down. A hoodie or light jacket per person.
• Swimsuit and towel if you set off early enough for the last swim of the day.
• Whatever you'd like to drink and nibble. Bring your own Albariño and snacks — there's a cool box on board. If you prefer, we'll tell you where to buy good ones in Vilanova before boarding.
• A camera or phone with battery left. Sounds obvious, but 90% of people reach the key moment at 8% battery from filming bateas.
• The will to do nothing at all. This is the calmest outing we offer. No rush, no route to tick off: just a setting sun and a whole ría to yourselves.

Who this trip is for

In our experience, the sunset trip is the all-rounder that works for everyone:

• Couples: hands down our most romantic plan. We've had more than one marriage proposal on board (so far, they've all said yes).
• Families: kids love the "spot dolphins in the last light" game, and since the sea is calm it's the most comfortable slot for anyone prone to seasickness.
• Groups of friends: ending a beach day with the sunset on board, quiet music and something cold in hand is hard to beat.
• Photography lovers: backlit bateas, the Punta Cabalo lighthouse in gold, an empty Areoso… one trip gives you the best shots of your summer.

How much does the sunset trip cost?

No small print — our rates are the same all day:

• Half day (4 hours): €300 — the perfect format for the sunset.
• Full day: €500 — if you want to combine an afternoon of coves and Areoso with the sunset as the finale.
• Fuel is charged separately, based on the route's actual consumption.
• Up to 6 guests plus skipper, so split between a group it works out at €50 a head for the whole evening.

The boat is a comfortable, stable 8.5-metre Rinker, and the skipper — that's us — is included: all you have to do is look west.
