The 7 best coves in the Arousa estuary only reachable by boat

The Areoso is just the most famous one. The Arousa estuary hides dozens of wild coves only reachable by sea. Our skippers' 7 favourites, with coordinates and best timing.

By Arousa Charter·

The Arousa estuary hides dozens of wild coves that don't appear in any tourist guide — because you can't reach them by car. Some don't even have an official name; local skippers call them by hyperlocal references. Here are the 7 favourites from our years sailing out of Vilanova, with the best moment of day, what to expect and why each one is worth the detour.

1. Areoso sandbank (Illa de Arousa)

The best known, and still the most impressive. White-sand tongue appearing and disappearing with the tide, surrounded by turquoise water, flat as a board, no trees for miles. The closest thing to the Caribbean in the North Atlantic.

  • Best moment: low tide, early morning or sunset.
  • Depth: very shallow, ideal for non-swimmers.
  • Distance from Vilanova: 25 min navigation.

2. Praia das Sinas (Vilanova de Arousa)

10 minutes out of Vilanova port you reach Praia das Sinas: 1 km sand strip between the mouth of the Umia river and the mussel-raft polygon. Part of it is car-accessible (the urban side), but the northern stretch is far quieter and only feels right from the sea.

  • Best moment: mid-afternoon for golden light.
  • Good for: SUP on flat water, family swim.

3. Punta Cabalo Cove (Illa de Arousa)

Sheltered cove at the foot of the iconic lighthouse, rock and sand bottom, crystalline water, pine shade. One of the best snorkel spots in the entire estuary — 4-5 m visibility in August.

  • Best moment: midday with sun, flat sea.
  • Good for: snorkel, photos, onboard picnic.
  • Distance from Vilanova: 18 min.

4. Praia da Lavanqueira (Illa de Arousa, west face)

The west side of Illa de Arousa is far wilder than the east. Lavanqueira is a small cove surrounded by wind-twisted pines, with colder and deeper water. The "wild" version of the island.

  • Best moment: days without north wind (which hits direct).
  • Good for: experienced swimmers, kayak, landscape photography.

5. Sálvora — Bueyes Cove (Atlantic Islands National Park)

Sálvora is the largest island of the Atlantic Islands Marine-Terrestrial National Park. Outside the estuary, in the open Atlantic, but reachable from Vilanova on flat-sea days (45-55 min navigation). Its Bueyes Cove has green-blue water, reddish granite, nobody around. A different experience to the estuary — more oceanic.

  • Best moment: flat-sea days (check forecast), preferably morning.
  • Important: protected area with regulation; only with skipper who knows the zone.
  • Good for: adventure, full day, spectacular photos.

6. Praia de Cabodeiro (O Grove)

On the opposite shore of the estuary, right across from the island, sits Cabodeiro: a fine-sand beach with panoramic view of the whole estuary. Reachable only on foot or by boat — the few visitors are locals.

  • Best moment: afternoon, sun dropping toward the island.
  • Good for: combining with A Toxa or O Grove on a full day.

7. Cortegada (Atlantic Islands National Park)

Cortegada is the only Atlantic Islands National Park island inside the estuary itself. It hosts the largest laurel forest in Europe (Bosque dos Loureiros). Landing is allowed only in authorised zones — the skipper knows where. The southern cove is perfect for a swim and the view of the forest from the sea is unique.

  • Best moment: mid-morning to combine swim + walk (with permit).
  • Good for: nature lovers, birdwatching, full day.
  • Distance from Vilanova: 30 min.

Areoso 25 min Photos + swim Low
Sinas 10 min SUP Any

Lavanqueira 22 min Nature Calm
Sálvora 50 min Adventure Flat calm

Cortegada 30 min Forest + cove Any

How to combine several in one trip

Half day (4 h) from Vilanova allows 2-3 close coves:

  • Sinas → Punta Cabalo → Areoso (most popular combo).
  • Or Punta Cabalo → Cortegada (more natural and quiet).

Full day (8 h) allows more:

  • Areoso in the morning → lunch on the island → Cortegada/Lavanqueira afternoon.
  • Or a more oceanic route: Punta Cabalo → Sálvora round trip with technical stops.

Important: respect what you see

Almost all these coves sit inside protected areas (National Park, Natural Park, ZEPA, Natura 2000). Basic rules:

  • No camping, no fires.
  • No climbing dunes or protected vegetation.
  • No litter, not even organic.
  • No disturbing wildlife (especially nesting birds in spring).
  • Leashed pets in authorised areas.

If we all respect this, these coves stay as they are.

The Rías Baixas have much more than the Areoso. If you'd like to discover it beyond what shows up on Instagram, the boat is the only way. And Vilanova de Arousa is the best possible starting point.
