The October Long Weekend by Boat on the Ría de Arousa: Spain's Best-Kept Autumn Escape

Spain's 12 October long weekend by boat on the Ría de Arousa is the perfect autumn escape: a quiet ría, golden light, seasonal shellfish and freshly harvested Albariño. Here is how to plan it from Vilanova de Arousa.

By Arousa Charter·

It happens every year. The first week of October arrives, people check the calendar, notice that 12 October (Spain's national holiday, the "Puente del Pilar") falls on a Monday and start hunting for a long-weekend plan. And almost everyone thinks of the same things: a city break, a country house, the mountains. Very few think of the sea. We rent out our boat from the harbour in Vilanova de Arousa, and for years we have watched the October long weekend turn out to be, quietly, one of the best dates of the year to go sailing on the Ría de Arousa. This year, with the holiday on a Monday, the long weekend works out perfectly.

In this guide we tell you honestly what you will find on the ría in mid-October, how to organise a two- or three-day escape, what to eat, where to stay and what the boat trip costs. No hype: we also tell you what can go wrong and how we handle it.

Why the October long weekend is a great time to sail the Ría de Arousa

There is a widespread idea that the boating season in Galicia ends in September. It does not, and the Ría de Arousa is the proof. Three concrete reasons:

  • The ría is empty. In August there is a queue for the anchorages at Areoso and around the Illa de Arousa; on the October long weekend you can have a whole cove to yourself. The mussel rafts, lighthouses and beaches look the way locals see them the rest of the year.
  • The sea is usually calm. October in Arousa is a transition month. Before the November storms arrive, it is common to string together days of light wind and flat water inside the ría, which is sheltered by the Illa de Sálvora. On a day like that, the trip is a pleasure cruise.
  • It is shellfish season and new-Albariño season. The grape harvest in Cambados and the Salnés valley finishes in late September. In October the wineries are in full fermentation, raft-grown mussels are at their best and Carril clams, razor clams and octopus are in peak condition. Few getaways combine sea and table this well.

And there is a fourth reason nobody mentions: the light. In October the sun sits lower, mornings dawn with mist over the ría and sunset falls at around a quarter to eight, right when we head back to harbour. If you like taking photos, there is no better month.

How to organise the escape: a three-day plan

Here is a sample plan for the 2026 October long weekend, from Saturday 10 to Monday 12 October, based in Vilanova de Arousa. You can easily trim it to two days.

Saturday: arrival, a stroll and shellfish

Take your time getting here. Vilanova is an hour and a half from A Coruña, an hour from Vigo and 45 minutes from Santiago. In the afternoon, a walk around the harbour and the seafront, the birthplace of the writer Valle-Inclán and, if you like wine, a visit to one of the wineries around Cambados, ten minutes away by car. A shellfish dinner in Vilanova or Cambados: by mid-October spider crab and velvet crab from the ría are available at good prices.

Sunday: full day on the boat

This is the big day. We leave Vilanova de Arousa harbour at around 10:30 with the tide and weather checked the night before. A typical full-day route in October:

  1. Mussel rafts off Vilanova and the Illa de Arousa. We explain how they work and why the Ría de Arousa produces more mussels than any other area in Europe.
  2. Punta Cabalo lighthouse, on the northern tip of the Illa de Arousa. With October's flat sea we get very close to the rocks.
  3. Areoso, the white-sand islet. In summer there are access restrictions and crowds; in October, if the weather plays along, it is an almost unreal place. The water is cooler by now, around 16-17 degrees, but someone always goes in.
  4. Lunch on board at anchor in the lee of the Illa de Arousa, next to the O Carreirón nature reserve. You bring the food, we provide the cool box, the table and the calm.
  5. In the afternoon, depending on the group's mood, a run towards Cambados and the Illa de Cortegada or a gentle return along the channel with a photo stop off the Illa de Rúa.

We return to harbour at around 18:30-19:00, with the light already golden. If the group would rather watch the sunset from the water, we adapt: in October the sun sets at about 19:45 and the run back to harbour takes ten minutes.

Monday 12: a relaxed half day or a land route

On the holiday itself we suggest a half-day trip (4 hours) for anyone who wants a second outing on a different route, for example the O Grove and A Toxa area, or exploring the Illa de Arousa by car over the bridge, with an octopus lunch in O Xufre before heading home.

What the weather is like on the Ría de Arousa in mid-October

Let us be clear, because this is the question everyone asks us on WhatsApp. In October, in Vilanova de Arousa, the norm is 18-21 degrees as a daytime high, cool mornings of 11-13 degrees and, in good years, three out of four days without rain. But this is Galicia in autumn: a front can come through and it can rain two days in a row.

What we do:

  • We check MeteoGalicia and the wind forecast 48 hours ahead and tell you exactly what it says. If the day is neither safe nor enjoyable, we do not go out.
  • We move the date free of charge within the long weekend if there is another good day, or refund your booking in full if there is not.
  • Inside the ría, with a light north-easterly, the boat sails sheltered by the Illa de Arousa. A grey, windless day is still a great day on the water; a sunny day with a strong south-westerly is not. We make that call as skippers, not the calendar.

What to bring for a day on the boat in October

It is not August, so the list changes slightly:

  • A windbreaker or light jacket for the morning sailing, even if you end up in a T-shirt by midday.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen: the October sun is deceptive, especially reflected off the water.
  • Swimsuit and towel in case anyone is brave enough at Areoso. A dry change of clothes helps.
  • Food and drink for the day, to your taste. A well-chilled bottle of last year's Albariño is almost compulsory; no need to bring a cool box, ours is on board.
  • Rubber-soled shoes that can get wet.
  • A camera or phone with a full battery. You will need it.

Where to stay and eat in Vilanova de Arousa and around

For the October long weekend, accommodation on the Ría de Arousa has plenty of availability, unlike August, and prices drop noticeably. Vilanova has small guesthouses by the harbour and rental homes five minutes' walk from the boarding point; Cambados, Vilagarcía and the Illa de Arousa are less than fifteen minutes away and widen the options. Book a week ahead and you will have plenty to choose from.

As for the table, in October we recommend without hesitation:

  • Steamed raft mussels: the very product you watched growing from the boat that morning.
  • Carril clams a la marinera, four kilometres from Vilanova.
  • Pulpo á feira (Galician-style octopus) on the Illa de Arousa.
  • Albariño from a small Cambados winery; ask for the previous vintage, now at its best.

What the boat trip costs on the October long weekend

Our prices are the same all year round, with no holiday surcharge:

Option Duration Price
Half day 4 hours €300
Full day 8-9 hours €500

Fuel is charged separately, based on what is actually used that day; on a relaxed full-day trip it usually comes to a moderate amount that we detail before setting off. The price is per boat, skipper included, for a maximum of 6 people. Our boat is 8.5 metres long and certified for 10, but we limit it to 6 passengers so everyone is comfortable. You do not need a boating licence: we are the skipper.

For a group of six, the full day works out at just over 80 euros per person plus a share of fuel. It is, by far, the October long-weekend plan in Galicia with the best ratio between what you pay and what you remember afterwards.

Questions we get every October

Is it too cold to sail? Not on a normal October day. On board you are fine with a jacket; at the stops, in the sun and out of the wind, it is T-shirt weather.

Can you swim at Areoso in mid-October? Yes, the water is 16-17 degrees. Fresh, but plenty of people do it. It is not compulsory.

What if it rains? We check 48 hours ahead. We change the day or refund your money. We never take you out to have a bad time.

Are there dolphins in October? It is one of the best times. Bottlenose dolphins enter the ría following the fish shoals and we see them often near the mouth of the ría and around Sálvora. We cannot guarantee it, but the odds are good.

Do I need to book far in advance? For the October long weekend it is worth locking in your day at least a week ahead. We have a single boat and autumn long weekends fill up faster than you would think.
