The mussel raft route by boat: see how Ría de Arousa mussels are born

Ría de Arousa holds the largest mussel farm in Europe. Here's what the bateas are, how to visit them by boat from Vilanova and why it's the most authentic trip in the Rías Baixas.

By Arousa Charter·

There's one image that defines Ría de Arousa like no other: hundreds of dark platforms floating in rows over the water, silent, lined up like a village on the sea. These are the bateas (mussel rafts), and this estuary has more than 2,300 of them — the largest concentration of mussel farming in Europe and, probably, the world. Most people see them from the shore without understanding what they are. From a boat, you literally step inside that landscape and discover one of Galicia's most fascinating stories.

For us, this is the most authentic route you can do in the Rías Baixas. It's not just another beach or a tourist postcard: it's seeing, touching and understanding how the product that has fed this estuary for generations is born.

What exactly is a batea

A batea is a floating platform — usually around 500 m² — from which up to 500 vertical ropes hang underwater. The mussels grow on those ropes, clinging naturally and feeding on the estuary's rich plankton. Each raft can produce several tonnes a year.

They aren't ancient: the floating-raft system was developed in Arousa in the mid-20th century and turned Galicia into the world mussel powerhouse it is today. What you see floating is, in fact, a living marine farm working beneath your feet.

Why see them from Vilanova de Arousa

Vilanova sits right in the heart of the raft area. In under 15 minutes of sailing from the port you're already surrounded by them, in the part of the estuary where farming is densest. Leaving from Sanxenxo or O Grove means sailing far longer to reach the same spot.

Mussel rafts and a small boat on the Ría de Arousa

Advantages of doing the route from here:

  • Proximity: the best rafts are just minutes away.
  • Calm waters: the estuary's south shore is sheltered, ideal for a slow approach.
  • Combinable: the same outing lets you add Illa de Arousa, Areoso beach or a gastronomic stop.

What the experience is like on board

We sail slowly between the rows of rafts while explaining how it all works: how mussels are "roped", how they're hauled up with the raft's own crane, how long they take to fatten and why Arousa mussels are famous for being the best. You'll see the gulls and cormorants that live off this ecosystem and, with luck, a working mussel boat in action.

It's a route that works for any age: kids are amazed, older visitors reconnect with timeless Galicia, and everyone suddenly understands why the Rías Baixas taste the way they do.

The perfect finish: fresh mussels on board

Nothing rounds off this route like eating what you've just watched grow. We can arrange freshly steamed mussels on board, with a chilled Albariño, anchored right beside the rafts. There's no fresher seafood possible: from sea to table in the very landscape where it grew.

You can also combine the route with a stop at a restaurant in Illa de Arousa or Vilanova for local seafood. We'll sort it out to suit you.

When to do it

The route runs all year round, but each season has its charm:

  • Summer (Jun–Sep): warmer waters, ideal to combine with a swim at Areoso.
  • Spring and autumn: fewer people, spectacular light for photography.
  • Any calm day: the rafts look best on a flat sea, common on the south shore.

Practical details

  • Recommended duration: half a day (4 h) is enough for rafts + one extra (Areoso or Illa). Full day if you want to add lunch and more coves.
  • Capacity: up to 6 people + skipper.
  • Rate: half day €300 · full day €500 · fuel extra. Mussels and drinks on board are quoted per group.
  • Includes: a local skipper who knows the estuary and its history, insurance and safety gear.

How to book

The bateas are the soul of Ría de Arousa: 2,300 platforms that explain why this estuary, and no other, became the seafood pantry of half of Europe. Seeing them from the water isn't just another trip — it's understanding Galicia from within.
