Team building on a boat in the Ría de Arousa: the company event your team actually wants

September is when companies get back up to speed: new targets, new hires, and that team meeting someone suggests holding "outside the office, for a change". We run a skippered boat charter from the port of Vilanova de Arousa, and we've watched that conversation play out for years whenever someone on the team knows the Rías Baixas: it ends on board. And they almost always come back the following year.

In this guide we explain how a team building day or corporate event on a boat in the Ría de Arousa works: the plan we run, which groups it suits, what it really costs and how to organise it without the person in charge having to fight the logistics.

Why a boat works better than a meeting room (or paintball)

We've seen it many times: there's something about a boat that no meeting room can replicate.

• Nobody checks their phone. In the middle of the ría, with the mussel rafts on one side and Illa de Arousa on the other, people actually talk. No projector, no agenda, no excuses to slip away.
• It levels the team. On board there are no offices and no hierarchy: the director and the newest hire sit in the same cockpit with the same breeze. It's the natural setting for people to genuinely get to know each other.
• It's effortlessly memorable. An escape room is forgotten in two weeks. Anchoring off a white-sand islet like Areoso, or cruising past the Punta Cabalo lighthouse, gets retold at the Christmas dinner.
• Zero organisation on your side. The skipper is included. Nobody on the team needs a licence, experience, or to know which end is the bow. You step aboard; we handle the rest.

The plan we run with teams

Every group is different, but this structure works best:

1. Boarding in Vilanova de Arousa

We depart from the port of Vilanova, 40 minutes from Santiago and Vigo and half an hour from Pontevedra. There's parking right by the port, so the team can arrive in shared cars without any hassle. We welcome the group, run a five-minute safety briefing and cast off.

2. Cruising the ría: mussel rafts, lighthouse and open water

The first hour is pure sightseeing under way: the maze of mussel rafts (over 2,000 floating platforms, the largest concentration in Europe), the coastline of Illa de Arousa and the Punta Cabalo lighthouse. This is when the group loosens up: photos, questions for the skipper, a story or two about the ría — this is where the Traslatio passed, the sea route by which, according to tradition, the remains of the Apostle Saint James arrived in Galicia.

3. Anchoring and a swim (or an aperitif) in a cove

We anchor in a sheltered cove or, weather permitting, off Areoso, the white-sand islet that looks lifted from the Caribbean. This is where the team building takes care of itself: a swim for the brave, paddle boarding or snorkelling if the group wants activity, and snacks on board for everyone. Bring your own cool box with whatever you like — an empanada, some good tinned seafood and an Albariño from Cambados never fail.

4. Finishing ashore (optional)

Many teams combine the boat trip with a seafood lunch after landing. Vilanova and the surrounding towns (Cambados, O Grove, Illa de Arousa itself) are full of places to round off the day in style. Ask us and we'll point you in the right direction, no strings attached: we're locals and we eat out often.

Which groups it suits (and which it doesn't)

Let's be honest — that's why we write this ourselves instead of an agency:

• Perfect fit: teams of up to 6 people — a small company, a department, the management team, that client you genuinely want to look after. Our boat is 8.5 metres and certified for 10, but we limit it to 6 passengers + skipper because the premium experience lies in being comfortable, not crammed.
• Bigger groups: if you're 10 or 12, the usual solution is two sailings (morning and afternoon) on the same day, or splitting the team across two days. It works surprisingly well: a small group bonds more than twenty people on a party boat.
• Not a fit: if you're after a party catamaran for 40 with loudspeakers, we're not your boat — and we'll tell you straight away so we don't waste your time.

What a corporate boat event costs

Clear rates, the same as any of our outings:

• Half day (4 hours): €300 — the most requested format for team building: a morning sail plus lunch ashore, or an afternoon sail ending with the sunset.
• Full day: €500 — for a more relaxed programme: two anchorages, more water activities and lunch on board or on the Illa.
• Fuel is charged separately, depending on the route. Settled at the end, no surprises.

Note the important detail: that's the price for the whole boat, not per person. A half day for 6 people works out at €50 a head — less than a mediocre set corporate menu, and considerably more memorable. And as a business expense, we invoice without any problem.

When to organise it: September and October are a secret

Everyone thinks of June, and June is great. But September and October are probably the best months for a corporate event on the Ría de Arousa: the water is still warm, the light turns golden, there's less traffic on the water and post-summer diaries welcome an excuse to reconnect. In autumn it also coincides with the Albariño grape harvest in the Rías Baixas — the wine-and-food finale organises itself.

We also sail in winter when the weather allows: the ría dead calm on a January morning, low light and nobody around, makes a management-and-coffee plan that surprises everyone.

How to book it without headaches

1. Message us on WhatsApp with an approximate date, how many you are and whether you prefer a half or full day.
2. We confirm availability and propose a plan based on the tide and the forecast.
3. If the weather turns, we move the date at no cost. With corporate groups we're especially mindful of this: we know how hard it is to align diaries.
